rugby volunteering Rochester NY

As the President and volunteer coach of the Fairport Rugby Club, Mark Hayden, Esq. works to teach children about the game of rugby while also helping them create friendships. Rugby is a game that Mark personally loves and played himself until recently. Since rugby is not recognized by Section Five as an official sport, Mark is fortunate enough to work with students from many surrounding school districts. For the past two years Mark has coached a student who immigrated to Rochester with his family from the Middle East. In addition, to playing rugby, this student works part-time to help support his family. Recently, the player shared with Mark how the acceptance he received from his teammates made it much easier for him to assimilate to his new home and school in Fairport. This past year, a refugee student from Guatemala joined the Fairport Rugby Club. Just a few weeks ago, the students’ foster parents shared with Mark how much being a part of the club has helped him create friendships. They credit the club’s acceptance and inclusiveness for his growth.

For the past 12 years, Segar & Sciortino has sponsored a team in the Pittsford United Soccer Club of which Greg Phillips, Esq. is a member. The Pittsford United Soccer Club was founded in 1991 to provide an athletic and social outlet for Pittsford area soccer players from college age to senior citizen age. The Club consists of eight teams at various levels in the Rochester District Soccer League which have won division championships over the years. In 2009, Greg founded the Over 50 team, the Relics, which he still currently manages.

Coretta Scott King said, “the greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members”.
